Chapter Fifteen

“I feel awful that Christine was left out of Julia’s will,” I said. It was the following morning, and George and I were getting dressed for the day.

“Hubert ought to have warned us that she wasn’t named,” he said, holding out an arm so Blakely could install his cuff link. “It was unnecessarily hurtful to have her join us.”

“The distressing part was that after all their years together, Julia chose to leave her nothing. No matter how Christine learned that fact, it would have hurt. I feel badly for her.” Bridget had finished with my hair, so I came to my feet and observed my reflection in the mirror. My dress was a very pale pink linen with an overlay of lace. It would act much less like an oven than what I’d worn the past two days.

“Perhaps we can do something for her,” I said. “Or you and Lissette can put her in charge of the perfumery or something of that nature.”

I turned when a knock sounded at the door. Before Blakely could get to it, Lissette pushed it open and peeked around the edge.

“Good morning, Cousin George,” she said.

He responded and gestured to me. “Frances is standing right here, too, Lissette,” he said.

I glanced at our young ward, who clearly wished I were somewhere else. Good manners prevent me from naming the place.

Lissette dragged out a sigh and planted a fist on her hip. “Bonjour to you, as well, Frances.” Before I could reply, she turned back to George. “I’d like to see the place where my mother died,” she said. “Will you take me?”

“Now you’re getting ahead of me,” George replied. “I don’t like the idea of you wandering around the city until we find your mother’s killer.”

Her jaw tightened. Her eyes narrowed. I feared for George’s safety.

When he glanced at me, I shrugged, as if to say, “Why not?”

He gaped, as if to say I’d lost my senses.

I gave him a pleading look.

“You are in agreement with her?” he asked.

Since he had spoken the words aloud, I took that as a win, though I might come to regret it. “We asked Lissette to come here to assist in the investigation,” I reminded him.

“Do you realize she may not be safe?”

“Then we will have to keep her by our sides and watch out for her.” I shifted my gaze to Lissette. “Otherwise I fear she is likely to venture out on her own.”

Lissette confirmed my suspicion by folding her arms over her chest.

George sighed. “I suppose there is some sense to that. I see the Hazelton stubbornness in the set of her chin. All right, we will take you, but there are some rules I expect you to follow.”

“Rules?” She made a face, as if the very word was offensive.

“Rules,” he repeated. “They’re like laws but with lesser penalties. First of all, until we know better, we shall all assume you are in danger.”

She tutted. Not a good idea.

“Lissette.” George’s voice was more of a growl. “Your father and mother were killed within a week of each other.
